I like to ask the student to identify what they want to accomplish. I will then tailor lessons to their needs. Often its useful to review a grammar concept and practice it a bit, but the main focus should always be on speaking so the student gets comfortable expressing himself/herself in French. The ability to communicate ideas is far more important than perfect grammar which tends to slow down a learner so much that the thread of what they are trying to communicate is lost.
In the past I have given students deductive learning opportunities for grammar, (good for analytic learners) opportunities to practice memorization with a ball (especially useful for kinetic learners) and lastly conversations based on an article (good for visual and auditory learners).
