I believe that learning the flute should be both enjoyable and rewarding. My lessons are tailored to each individual student, helping them build strong technique, musical understanding, and confidence while exploring music that genuinely excites and motivates them. Whether you are a complete beginner, returning to the flute after a break, or an advanced player preparing for auditions or exams, I adapt my teaching approach to suit your goals, interests, and learning style.
A typical lesson combines several elements to support well-rounded musical development. We may work on technical exercises to improve tone, breathing, finger technique, articulation, and overall fluency on the instrument. Sight-reading and musicianship skills are also incorporated where appropriate, helping students become confident and independent musicians. Alongside technical work, a significant part of each lesson is dedicated to repertoire, allowing students to develop their musical expression and performance skills through pieces they enjoy.
I aim to create a supportive and encouraging learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and progressing at their own pace. Depending on the student’s interests, lessons can also include creative activities such as improvisation, musical storytelling, and imaginative approaches to music-making. This is inspired by my Fantasy Flute project, which combines music with fantasy themes and encourages creativity and engagement through storytelling.
For younger students, lessons are often shorter and incorporate games and playful activities to maintain focus and enjoyment. Older students and adults benefit from a structured but flexible approach that balances technical development with musical exploration.
I hold Undergraduate (First Class Honours) and Postgraduate (Distinction) degrees from the Royal College of Music, where I also completed teaching modules as part of my training. I have several years of private teaching experience and have been invited to teach both group and individual lessons at summer music academies. I teach students of all ages and abilities and am passionate about helping each student develop their skills, confidence, and enjoyment of music.
