Kristen Pellot

I taught 3-15 year old students in Fuzhou, China for 2 years. When I returned to the United States, I tutored 5-9 year olds in their homes, working with their teachers to make sure the students were at the correct level in their reading comprehension and writing. I also taught writing and reading to teenage Chinese students online. With this position, I taught students to write several different types of essays including literary analysis essays. Upon arriving in the UK to complete my master's degree in English Literature, I began mentoring with Debate Mate. I went into a secondary school every week to teach debate to aid students in their public speaking skills and overall confidence. My group of year 7-9 students went from never debating before to teaching year 11s how to debate and winning 3 of their 4 debates within a school year. I also had the opportunity to chair and judge several debates. My classes are very interactive and engaging as I like to teach through games and activities. I also try to keep the learning as student centered as possible by differentiating the material and involving students' interests and goals into their learning.
