The main focus of my lessons is to come to grips with the content that might currently be causing issues for the student - if it's set text translations or unseens I take a careful but engaging approach in making sure the student understand the way the language works and we highlight issues of grammar and vocabulary that might be turning up consistently. When I learnt my own set texts I prioritised memorising vocabulary lists and tackling complex grammar over a rote memorisation of the set texts and I believe this leads to a better understanding of the text. If necessary, we can look at authors beyond the curriculum in order to come to grips with how the language works in a more interesting and refreshing way. If it's essays or comprehension questions I aim to encourage the student's individuality, as I think this is always important when answering more creative questions, while ensuring that the sudent meets the markscheme's criteria. I also prioritise looking at transferrable skills - i.e. close text stylistic analysis that can be applied similarly in English literature and Latin/Greek, or the ability to write a beautifully structured essay in both History and English. I am particularly interested in teaching the English to Greek translation question at A level. Although this is a daunting option, I believe that it is extremely fulfilling to tackle this question successfully and I believe that a successful result in this option is the highest level a student can achieve at Ancient Greek A level. I tutor Ancient Greek, Latin, and English literature GCSE & A level, and History GCSE.
