I will ask them what area they are struggling in and if they have any questions in particular they want to bring with them such as a previous exam or class homework. If not we can follow the specification for their board and select problems from there. It will start by an introductory section where they will ask me what they know about a topic and I will fill in the gap using the specification so they also are aware of what will be examined. Then a few opening questions to gauge their knowledge before some problems to do for themselves where they will go through the problem , thinking out loud each step. If there's time we can look at the most difficult problems and any questions they have.

These are some techniques I have used and have seen during my own tutoring lessons.
