From past experience I have found that there is no single approach to teach biology, as the students' goals, and the student themselves are often unique. For example, when with a student intent on pursuing biology I work to instill a passion and curiosity beyond just their mark scheme. Including cutting edge research, in article (selected to be digestible for the students level), blog post or documentary format into my lessons that will help them at higher levels of study and build a holistic understanding. However, for students on a time crunch or prioritising their grade, my methods will be focused on understanding mark scheme nuance, question structure and memorisation techniques. I can also blend these two approaches deepening on time of year (increasing focus on exam skills towards exam season) and upon my observations of how the student learns.
Before taking on any student I would like to have a discussion (by video / phone call, or email) to better understand their learning style and goals.
