Whilst I have no experience of formal tutoring, I did help teachers run maths workshops for students in lower years at lunchtime in school while I was in sixth form. In doing this I began to learn that every student requires a different style of teaching. Thus, I would try a range of teaching styles when I meet a new student in order to be able to truly find the perfect style to suit their individual needs. This may include powerpoint presentations to cover the basic knowledge behind the work, then going into textbook examples to walk them through the type of questions. I would then go on to find past paper questions, only once I have believed they have mastered the skills needed to complete a particular section of maths. I have also learnt how daunting past paper exam questions can be, so I would ensure when doing this that I would take them on a step by step tutorial of how to tackle the questions and identify to them where they are able to get marks. I would further give the students little homework tasks to complete outside of our lessons to ensure that they would be able to do such questions independently, then checking how they got on in the next session in order to assess if we need to work on the particular skill further in order to ensure they have mastered the topic or see if we are able to move on. I would like to build an open and honest relationship with my students in order to maximise our sessions together and hopefully get them to reach their full potential.
