Hazel Wilks

I have worked as a professional botanical illustrator at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, since 2001, and I love sharing the drawing and painting skills I have developed over more than 20 years as an illustrator.

Since January 2026, I have also been working as a Botanical Art Tutor at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, teaching students on the Certificate, Advanced Certificate and Diploma courses.

Whether you are completely new to drawing, returning to art after a long break, or already have experience and would like to develop your skills further, I can help you become a more confident and observant artist.

I teach observational drawing and sketching, pen and ink, and watercolour, with a particular focus on botanical and natural history subjects. My approach combines accurate observation with practical, achievable techniques that help you understand what you are seeing and translate it successfully onto paper.

I have taught a wide variety of adult classes, including regular courses at the Landmark Arts Centre in Teddington such as ‘How to Illustrate British Butterflies’ and ‘Painting Exquisite Dragonflies’.

Most importantly, I want my lessons to be enjoyable! I create a relaxed and encouraging environment where you can ask questions, experiment and develop at your own pace. My students frequently tell me that my classes are fun and interesting, and that they come away with lots of new techniques and a much better understanding of how to approach their artwork.
