My lessons are structured, purposeful, and interactive. Each session follows a clear format:
1. Hook (5–10 minutes)
We begin with a provocative question, image, quotation, or short source extract. For example:
Was Napoleon Bonaparte a defender of the revolution — or its destroyer?
This immediately gets you thinking rather than passively listening.
2. Context & Core Knowledge (15–20 minutes)
I provide clear, concise explanation of the key events, individuals, and themes. Complex topics — whether the causes of the First World War or the impact of the Industrial Revolution — are broken down into logical steps so you fully understand both the narrative and the underlying forces.
3. Source Work & Analysis (20 minutes)
You’ll work with primary and secondary sources: speeches, letters, propaganda, statistics, cartoons.
For example, when studying Adolf Hitler, we analyse how language and imagery were used to persuade and manipulate. You learn how to evaluate reliability, bias, and intent — key skills for exams and beyond.
4. Discussion & Debate (15 minutes)
History is interpretation. We debate questions such as:
• Was the Treaty of Versailles fair?
• Could the Cold War have been avoided?
You’ll learn to support arguments with evidence and challenge ideas respectfully.
5. Exam Skills & Reflection (10 minutes)
We regularly practise structured writing, source evaluation, and essay planning so that you not only understand history — you know how to express that understanding effectively under exam conditions.
