Typically, a session might involve going through a specific topic the student has found challenging, working through practice questions together, and then moving onto past paper questions to apply what we've learned. I always make sure the student understands the conceptual significance behind the method, not just the steps, which can make a huge difference in building confidence and improving exam performance. I keep sessions patient and low-pressure, so students feel comfortable asking questions and working through things at their own pace.
My approach is shaped by my experience teaching across different levels – from secondary school classrooms to undergraduate university courses. Bringing this perspective into A-Level tutoring means I can anticipate where students might struggle, explain things in multiple ways if one approach doesn't click, and help students make connections between topics that aren't always obvious from the textbook. I also draw on my PGCE training to structure sessions effectively, breaking down complex ideas into manageable steps, using questioning to check understanding, and gradually removing scaffolding as students gain confidence so they can tackle problems independently.
For students who want to push further, I can extend beyond the syllabus, introducing ideas from university-level maths that can provide a different perspective on A-Level content and deepen understanding. This is particularly useful for students considering maths at a competitive university or sitting admissions tests.
Above all, I want students to leave a session feeling more confident in their own ability than when they arrived.
