Finlay Friedersdorff

I am just finishing my first year studying maths at Durham University, and want to pass on my knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject to others. I will do this by addressing frustrations I had during my time in school, particularly around how we were always made to memorise and repeat specific methods, not fully understanding how or why what we did worked. I belive that building an understanding of this stops you from having to memorise these things, as solutions become obvious, as opposed to the output of a blindly applied algorithm. I would teach online, through screen sharing and writing on an iPad. We will work through problems, both exam questions and non-standard problem solving exercises as I belive working through these types of more interesting problems are what makes maths actually enjoyable. I can adapt to how you learn best, and will be be fairly informal. The lessons are aimed at students in later years of GCSE Maths with an interest in pursuing mathematical subjects at A-level, and A-level Maths and Further Maths students.
