I am a native Mandarin Chinese speaker based in London, offering both online and in-person lessons for children, teenagers and adult learners. I have previous experience teaching children and supporting private learners, and I achieved an A* in A-Level Chinese. I understand that learning Mandarin can initially feel challenging, particularly with pronunciation, tones and Chinese characters, so I aim to make each lesson clear, practical and enjoyable.
My lessons are personalised according to each student's current level, interests and goals. For complete beginners, I normally start with pronunciation and Pinyin, the four tones, essential vocabulary and simple sentence structures. We then gradually build towards everyday conversations, listening, reading and character recognition. For students who already have some knowledge of Mandarin, I can focus more closely on speaking fluency, grammar, vocabulary development, reading comprehension and correcting common pronunciation mistakes.
A typical lesson combines explanation with active practice. Rather than simply asking students to memorise vocabulary lists, I use practical examples, short conversations, questions, repetition and real-life situations to help students understand how Mandarin is actually spoken. I also encourage students to speak as much Mandarin as possible during lessons while explaining difficult concepts in English when necessary.
For younger learners, I can make lessons more interactive and accessible through simple vocabulary exercises, repetition, visual examples and conversation practice. For adult learners, lessons can be adapted towards travel, everyday communication, Chinese culture, university study or general conversational Mandarin.
Most importantly, I adjust the pace of each lesson to the individual student. My aim is to create a relaxed learning environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions and gradually becoming more confident using Mandarin independently.
