My lessons are structured but also flexible. I tailor each session to my student’s pace and ability, creating a unique learning plan for every individual. This plan is developed during our first lesson together, where we discuss their current level, strengths and areas for improvement, as well as their target grade or overall goal. This allows both of us to plan ahead and clearly understand what our lessons will involve, creating a focused and realistic pathway towards success. I also use this initial session to identify any gaps in foundational knowledge that may need revisiting before moving on to more advanced topics. By building a strong foundation first, students feel more confident tackling challenging material later on.
During lessons, I maintain a supportive, motivating and collaborative environment. I encourage students to ask questions at any point so the session feels interactive rather than lecture based. I believe students learn best when they actively engage with the material, so I incorporate active recall strategies such as quick quizzes, verbal explanations, flashcard style questioning, and practice summaries. This approach helps consolidate information and strengthen long-term memory rather than relying on passive note taking and reading.
I also include past paper questions and exam style practice to familiarise students with the structure, wording, and expectations of their specific exam board, specifically the SQA. We break down mark schemes together so they understand exactly how to gain full marks. My goal is not only to improve grades but to build genuine understanding, confidence, and independent study skills that students can carry forward beyond our lessons.
