I am a maths tutor with a strong background in SEN education, offering personalised support from Primary through to GCSE. As a former SEN Teaching Assistant, I have extensive experience supporting students with a wide range of abilities and learning styles, alongside 1:1 tutoring, maths interventions, homework support and helping students close gaps in curriculum knowledge. I hold a Certificate of Higher Education in Mathematics.

I know from personal experience that struggling with maths does not mean you are incapable of understanding it. I benefited from tutoring and targeted support myself at school and later went on to study Mathematics at university. When someone feels they “just don't get maths”, I believe they often just need someone to understand how they learn, explain things in a way that makes sense to them, and work at a pace that allows it to first click and then be reinforced.

My approach is calm, structured and interactive. I use an “I do, we do, you do” approach: demonstrating a method clearly, working through it together, then supporting the student to apply it independently. I want students to leave a session not just having followed what I did, but knowing they can tackle those questions themselves.

Lessons are built around each student's goals and the time available to reach them. Together, we can create a clear roadmap: identifying strengths and knowledge gaps, prioritising the topics that will have the greatest impact, and focusing our time where it is most needed. Where students are receiving support at school or college, I can work alongside this so that tutoring time is used effectively rather than unnecessarily covering the same ground twice.

Support can include homework help, strengthening foundations, catching up on missed learning, working towards a predicted or target grade, and GCSE exam or resit preparation. For students approaching a particular grade boundary, I can target the knowledge and marks needed to secure their current level before working towards the crossover marks for the next grade.

I can also create structured revision plans, provide targeted practice and homework that fits around the student's schedule, and produce revision notes and ongoing key-concept cards to consolidate learning between sessions.

Above all, I want students to develop genuine understanding and belief in their own ability. Maths is universal, but the way we learn it is individual. I adapt my explanations, pace and resources to the learner, taking the time to find an approach that makes sense to them and helps them become increasingly confident and independent.
