I am a native English speaker and my teaching style will vary depending on where you are in your academic career or in your learning journey.
For those learning English as a foreign language, I would spend the first few lessons getting to know your skill level and what you would like to get out of these lessons. After that, the lessons would be more structured and I would likely use a presentation to keep the lessons structured. In order to make it easy for you to stay up to date with your learning, a shared google document where you can track anything new that you have covered in our lessons would also be made, where I will add useful information and tips to support your learning.
For those learning English as a young student, my teaching approach will be similar but if you already have a strong foundation, I would try to introduce more advanced reading material to push you beyond the curriculum, so you can learn new skills. If the student is preparing for the 11+, I can help with practice questions and in particular, with creative writing, as many 11+ exams have a creative writing section. My teaching style can be adjusted to the needs of each student, as I am a very flexible tutor and am always open to suggestions.
For those seeking a bit more assistance as a secondary school student, once again, my teaching methods will be similar. However, as you enter secondary school there is more of a focus on literature. Therefore, the lessons would likely have more structure and we could work through what you are reading and studying at school together, so you can feel more confident going into your lessons. Additionally, in preparation for the poems at GCSE, I would also start introducing the techniques and terminology that you need to know and be able to identify in order to achieve a high grade at GCSE. My teaching approach will be similar to this for GCSE students, expect with a clearer focus on the material that they are studying for the exams.
Although I do not have a lot of professional experience, I believe that my experience as an assistant teacher, as well as my experience as a charity shop volunteer, has helped me to develop the skills necessary for the role of a tutor.
