I am a current PhD candidate researching Roman Archaeology at the University of Leicester, and I have previously worked as a seminar tutor at the University of Leicester. My experiences in Academia (both as a student and teacher), have taught me the importance of setting down expectations ahead of time, and familiarizing yourself with the material beforehand. Before the first session, I generally ask for the books and resources their class and/or prior tutor is using so that I can quickly and smoothly pick up where the teacher or tutor left off. During the first session, I start out new students with a small set of exercises to better judge their level and aptitude.

Future sessions vary both based on where the student is in school at the moment, and how good of a grasp the student has on the material. However, my prior experiences in teaching have revealed that simply talking at your student is often unproductive, and that it is better to talk with your student instead, especially if the student is struggling. As such, my teaching methods are more collaborative, and I tailor lessons to each student's needs and levels, regardless of where they are at. Sometimes this entails exercises, or handouts to track progress. Sometimes this entails the use of educational videos and games. Sometimes this involves allowing the student to talk through and cement what they already know, and process what they are learning. The main goal is to lean into the student's strengths, interests, and build confidence in the subject(s) being taught.
