My tutoring style typically works as follows:

The first session focuses on understanding the context, time frame, goals, current methods and resources, and motivation for seeking tuition. We collaboratively determine what the checkpoints and ultimate success look like before reaching an agreement.

My sessions always have a conversational factor where students have the opportunity to demonstrate their approach to their work.

An hour is generally enough to have a quality session. Students who are working on dissertations, particularly experimental design and methods, sometimes need a dedicated block of time on the weekend. I try to keep a maximum of 3-4 hours in a sitting in this case.
