I have been teaching piano for 30 years, privately and also in an independent secondary school in Cambridge, UK. I try to make lessons as enjoyable as possible and make it flexible according what you would like to learn. Some people want to learn many styles of music; others want to focus on a specific type. I can teach a range of music from classical (Baroque , Classical, Romantic, French impressionistic, ragtime, some jazz, Contemporary) to improvisation, pop, Asian pop, Anime, Film and TV themes, musicals and Christian modern, Hymns, worship music. I can teach piano duets (4-hands one piano), concertos and ensembles.

I have designed my own teaching methodology based on neuroscience, which I call, "Everything you want to learn for a new piano piece, you learned in Reception. " This is applicable to absolute beginners through professional level.

I teach in-person in Cambridge, UK or online. I am natively fluent in English (American and British) and Mandarin Chinese (with which I have taught online lessons)

It is up to the student (along with the family and me ) to choose music for Graded exams, completely non-Graded works or a mixture of Graded and non-Graded music. Some students may choose to enter competitions and masterclasses with a renowned Concert Pianist with whom I have connections. Other students learn piano for sheer enjoyment. My aim is to help you in whatever direction you want for piano.

All of this is based on a firm foundation I teach of technique (scales, chromatic scales, arpeggios, broken chords, octaves, proper chord techniques) and various touch styles to suit different areas of the work.

I incorporate music theory within teaching the different periods of works. I also teach historical background for the eras and their differences, as well as show how to analyze the forms of the music, which helps with memorization.

Rarely, do I assign exercises or studies, unless they sound very musical and are enjoyable. (Moskowski, Chopin are examples, or specific ones that either I designed or have been passed down from my mentors e.g., finger independence, forearm-rotation, certain kinds of touch, etc.) The other occasion that I assign exercises are to be used immediately for a skill in the piece they are working on , so they can understand the purpose for it and not get bored with exercises.

I have designed my own system for ease of reading music based an analogy to the floors of a building.

In summary, all the elements in the lessons are to culminate in enjoyable expressions of music to express all the kinds of emotions you will have over a lifetime.
