I have had experience tutoring GCSE and A-level chemistry as a chemistry prefect during sixth form. Additionally, I ran physics society for younger students which has helped me gain a good understanding of how to make sessions engaging and educational. I am a second year chemistry student at The University of Manchester, and having recently sat my A-levels, I know the course like the back of my hand.
My tutorials will focus on content the student is less confident with, this can be determined from recommendations or by completing practice questions which I will provide. My lessons will focus on understanding the content to provide them with transferable skills. This will give them a good foundation to tackle questions of varying difficulties. The knowledge will be consolidated with questions in the students free time.
My style of teaching will have the students talking to me. As I teach the course, students will use their scientific knowledge to explain concepts back to me, rather than just accepting it as truth. This allows them to solidify their prior knowledge, and for me to understand their thinking process and reasoning. When stuck, I will provide hints. This method will ensure the student is engaged and is taking everything in. Additionally, this repetition and practice will ensure knowledge is stored long term.
For the most part, chemistry is logical and makes sense. Giving students the opportunity to figure things out rather than be told meaningless content will provide them with a framework to achieve consistency, and the ability to reach the higher grades.
My lessons will always be engaging and will help all students make the most of their own abilities.
