My approach to teaching the English language strives to be all-encompassing. I typically begin lessons by discussing the historical context and modern importance of the text, and discuss its potential relevance to other areas of study. As we read through a text, I ask the student questions regarding dictions, dialect, language, and other text specific questions. If there is ever a lack of understanding, I will dissect a specific topic for me and the student to discuss. I break complex topics down step-by-step. I like for the lessons to remain student-led, so as to not constrain their natural interests and curiosities. I give positive reinforcement and always maintain a comfortable environment for learning, so as to give the student space to grow and understand the material fully. To me, literature is a form of art and I want my lessons to reflect that attitude by remaining engaging and expressive. I like to end my lessons with the student re-stating what they've learned, and adding what they found most interesting and would like to engage with in the future, as well as what they have found difficult or feel they need to work on. I take all of this in account to not only determine what the student needs to improve on, but also what they love about learning and found particularly inspiring to curate more impactful and informative lessons.
I started tutoring on a volunteer basis five years ago, and now I do it professionally. Over the course of my time tutoring, I have taught all areas of study from primary school to university students.
