Every student is different. Some are interested in learning how to pronounce correctly while reading, some want to jump in to start a conversation, it all depends. In my experience, learning how to communicate in normal every day situations is the most interesting part of leaning a language, once I am able to start formulating sentences, I want to keep on going. I am learning thai myself, and reading is extremely difficult as their writing style is not romanized/latinized. I am more interesting in being able to establish verbal connection with someone, than being able to read a book.
