My lessons are tailored to the individual student and are designed to build not only subject knowledge, but also confidence, study skills, and exam technique. As a qualified biochemist and immunologist with a BSc in Biochemistry, an MRes in Advanced Biological Sciences, over seven years of teaching experience, and four years supporting undergraduate STEM students, I bring both specialist subject expertise and a strong understanding of how students learn.
The first lesson is a discovery and diagnostic session. Rather than immediately beginning content delivery, I work with the student to identify their strengths, areas for development, confidence levels, and learning preferences. We will discuss their current studies, previous assessment results, and any topics they find particularly challenging. I use a structured diagnostic assessment covering key areas of biology to identify knowledge gaps, misconceptions, and exam technique issues. This allows me to create a personalised learning plan focused on the student’s specific needs.
Subsequent lessons follow a structured but flexible format. Each session begins with retrieval practice to strengthen long-term memory and reinforce previous learning. We then focus on a targeted topic, breaking complex biological concepts into clear, manageable explanations supported by examples, diagrams, and discussion. Students are encouraged to ask questions and develop their scientific thinking rather than simply memorising facts.
A significant part of each lesson is dedicated to applying knowledge through GCSE-style questions and exam practice. We work through mark schemes together, helping students understand how to communicate their knowledge effectively and maximise marks. Alongside content knowledge, I support students in developing revision strategies, organisational skills, and independent learning habits that will benefit them throughout their education.
Whether a student is struggling with core concepts, aiming to improve their grades, or working towards the highest marks, my goal is to provide a supportive and encouraging environment where they can develop both competence and confidence in biology.
