My lessons are built around what actually moves the needle for each student, not just working through a textbook page by page. I focus on the areas that tend to hold people back most, including speaking confidence, grammar (especially verb conjugation), and exam technique. I adapt every session to what my particular student needs, rather than following a fixed plan.
Sessions typically run 45-60 minutes and combine grammar consolidation, vocabulary building, and spoken practice. Speaking confidence is often the biggest gap for KS3 and GCSE students, so I make sure it's never just theory; every lesson includes actual spoken French, not only written exercises. Each session ends with a clear sense of progress and a focus for next time, so students always know where they stand.
My own A* in A-level French means I've been through these exact specifications myself, and recently, so I know first-hand where the mark schemes get strict and which mistakes come up more frequently. I'll be continuing with French at degree level at UCL from September, studying International Social and Political Studies with French, which keeps the language an ongoing part of my day-to-day!
