When I first start with a student, I like to take at least one session to get to know them, what they are good at and what their weak points are, as well as their personality, interests, learning style, and their attitude to learning for specific subjects. This helps me to tailor my sessions accordingly.
My sessions usually begin with a short check-in to understand what the student needs help with that day. This may include homework support, revision of classwork, or guidance with organisation, time management, and focus. I then work with the student step by step, breaking tasks into manageable parts and offering clear explanations, encouragement, and practical strategies throughout. I place strong emphasis on patience, reassurance, and helping students feel comfortable asking questions.
My teaching style is structured but flexible. I aim to provide enough guidance to support understanding, while also encouraging students to think independently, ask questions freely, and take ownership of their learning. Over time, this helps students become more confident, organised, motivated, resilient, and self-sufficient in their schoolwork.
I am particularly mindful of a child’s attitude towards learning and how they feel about school. I believe confidence, encouragement, and a positive mindset play a key role in academic progress, especially at primary level. My goal is to help students feel supported, engaged, and positive about learning, so that they can approach their schoolwork with greater confidence both during and outside of tutoring sessions.
