As an A Level Biology tutor, I would aim to make every lesson engaging, personalised and focused on helping students develop a genuine understanding of Biology rather than relying purely on memorisation. Having achieved an A* in A Level Biology myself and now studying Medicine at King’s College London, I understand both the challenges of A Level Biology and the importance of developing effective study and exam techniques. I would use this experience to create lessons that are structured, supportive and tailored to each student’s individual learning style, goals and areas of difficulty.
At the beginning of each lesson, I would assess the student’s existing knowledge and identify specific topics or concepts they are less confident with. I would then break down complex biological processes into smaller, more manageable sections, using clear explanations, diagrams, examples and, where appropriate, links to medicine and real-life applications. I believe that connecting Biology to topics students may encounter in everyday life or medicine can make the subject much more interesting and memorable.
I would make my lessons interactive rather than simply talking through content. I would regularly ask questions, encourage students to explain concepts in their own words and use active recall to strengthen their understanding. I would also incorporate exam-style questions throughout the lesson, helping students become familiar with the wording and structure of A Level Biology questions. A key part of my teaching would be developing exam technique, including understanding mark schemes, using precise scientific terminology and learning how to structure high-mark answers effectively.
Most importantly, I would create a positive and encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. I would adapt my approach based on their progress and provide constructive feedback so they can recognise their improvements and build confidence. By the end of each lesson, I would recap the key learning points and identify clear areas for further revision, ensuring that each session contributes towards long-term progress and exam success.
