My years of working with young people have taught me that the most effective strategies are those bespoke to each student.
In our first session, I identify the student’s learning style—visual, auditory, reading/writing, or kinesthetic—and adapt my resources accordingly. Together, we create a list of assessment dates for the year, highlighting the areas that should be mastered by each milestone.
I follow the “I do, we do, you do” teaching model, which balances support and independence to promote effective learning.
Each lesson begins with a short educational starter activity to build rapport and a positive dynamic, as respect and engagement are key to academic success. For example, a student might be asked to sell me a pen within a set time limit, encouraging creativity and communication skills.
Once enthusiasm is present, I introduce the topic and learning objectives using a PowerPoint or worksheet, depending on the student’s preference. We then complete a guided activity together, followed by an independent task where the student demonstrates understanding.
Lessons conclude with feedback and the setting of relevant homework or goals for the next session.
