Ali Abdelatif

I'm Ali, a trainee secondary Computer Science teacher on the University of Warwick PGCE, funded by a BCS Computing Teacher Scholarship. I graduated from the University of Leeds with a 2:1 in Computer Science, which I completed as a degree apprenticeship while working for four years as a software engineer at PwC UK. I have an Enhanced DBS certificate.

I tutored privately from 2020 to 2022, online and in person, from primary level up to A-Level. I also teach weekend classes to children at a local madrasah and help run education programmes and a summer camp.

I tutor GCSE and A-Level Computer Science for AQA, OCR, Edexcel and Eduqas/WJEC. Lessons are usually one hour, online or in person in Birmingham.

The first lesson starts with a few diagnostic questions so I can see where the gaps are. After that I work in small steps: I model an example, we do one together, then the student tries one and talks me through their reasoning. I ask questions rather than lecture, so misconceptions come up early.

For programming, students write and debug the Python themselves rather than watching me do it. For written questions I teach command words, how marks are allocated and how to structure longer answers, using past papers and mark schemes. I set short tasks between lessons and keep parents updated on progress.

Topics I cover include programming, algorithms and data structures, data representation, computer systems and architecture, networks and cyber security, databases and SQL, theory of computation, and support with NEA projects. Because of my time in industry, I can also show students how these topics are used in real software.
