I love to interact with children and young adults. Love for tutoring is the main reason I do this. I also want to impact my knowledge and make a difference.
I’m from Nigeria and we had very strict teachers and learning wasn’t fun. It was terrifying. As a tutor, I’m grateful that I went through that rigorous training to gain knowledge but it has helped me to know what to do to be a different kind of tutor. I don’t want to instill fear in my students, rather I like to use the gentle approach so they can learn more.
I Design hands-on lessons to Get my students up and moving. This makes the classes less boring. I use various participation structures and scenery and Use visuals often. This helps them to retain the lessons, it’s hard to forget what they can see and relate to.
I Limit the amount of time I spend talking. So I can listen more and know where to impact . One would be surprised at how much children and young adults know, and they just need a voice.
I Provide opportunities for cooperative learning and Allow my students to regularly share what they think. Also I encourage team work and participation if I have a group of students to tutor together.
Assignments are challenging and interesting.
Expecting students to sit quietly and listen to me for several hours out of every day is not practical . If i find that they desperately need to refocus before I try to engage them in a lesson or activity, I try a brain break to let them wiggle it out. Often, it is more productive to allow students some time to be wild than try to prevent them from feeling fidgety or restless.
