I have just completed my A levels in Geography, RE and history and achieved A* A* A . This means I am very familiar with actual revsion, not simply the latest ideas about revsion but what is actually effective.
A balance between fact retention and exam skills is necessary to excel in geography and I am able to support students in both. This includes guiding students towards effective revision strategies that actually work but also informing them of the many websites/tools that are already available.
In order to help students with exam skills I can generally support them but also tailor lessons to their specific exam board. This will allow students to gain a confidence so that they know what to expect when they open an exam paper and will allow them to put revsion and knowledge to good use.
I will discuss what students would most like to gain from their lessons to tailor the sessions to them. For instance, a student may have good recall but struggle to get higher marks as they lack exams skills.
I will give different examples of revision techniques and how to properly use them. For instance flash cards and cover/write/check techniques.
For exam skills I will read the students work and clearly highlight to them what they are doing correctly and how they could improve their answers to achieve higher marks.
If the student is missing in any knowledge e.g. due to missed school or missed teachers, I will be happy to fill in any gaps so that they are at no disadvantage.
