Why can't we recognise our voice?

In my singing lessons, a lot of my classmates don't recognise themselves when they hear themselves sing... Is this normal? Why not?

Yeah, totally normal. Most people don’t recognise their own voice on recordings because we’re used to hearing ourselves from inside our heads, not outside of it. When we speak or sing, the sound travels through our skull and bones, which makes our voice seem warmer, deeper, or fuller to us. A recording only captures the external sound — the version everyone else hears — so it often feels higher, thinner, or just “different.” It’s not that they’re singing weirdly, it’s just their brain isn’t used to hearing their real outside voice. Happens to pretty much everyone at first!
