Absolutely everyone can improve their singing voice. Some people start with natural advantages (good pitch, strong breath control, musical background), but almost nobody is “born” a great singer. Singing is mostly coordination between breath + vocal folds + resonance - coordination is something you can train just like any other skill.
Most people who think they “can’t sing” are really just dealing with things like tension, lack of breath support, or not knowing how to place the sound. All of that is fixable with good technique.
Are some people predisposed?
Sure - just like some people naturally run faster or pick up languages quicker. But predisposition only affects ‘how fast’ you improve, not whether you ‘can’ improve.
And yes, singing lessons absolutely help! A good teacher can spot things you’d never notice yourself, correct habits early, and guide you step by step. If you’re practising alone, it’s easy to build tension or reinforce mistakes without realising.
So in short: 1. Yes, nearly everyone can get better. 2. Yes, it’s a trainable skill, not only a magical gift. 3. Yes, lessons will get you there much faster and much healthier.
If you enjoy it and put in small, consistent practice, you’ll definitely see progress.
