Andrew Hainsworth: general letter of application
I am a dedicated and enthusiastic practitioner who enjoys new challenges. I am an excellent classroom teacher with strong pastoral skills. In my career I have worked in a wide variety of schools and have taught students aged from five to eighteen years. Whatever the situation, certain aspects of my teaching remain immutable: a warm, friendly personality, a commitment to high standards and an ability to engage students in their learning, helping them to become the very best they can be.
In my classroom learning is fun. Wherever possible I seek to broaden the curriculum. I enjoy planning and delivering creative, stimulating lessons that capture the students’ imagination and raise interest and attainment in their learning. When we studied the Great Fire of London the Year 2 students had to line up in a human chain and put out a (sadly imaginary!) fire. We discussed differences between the past and the present and then used our firefighting skills to write some insightful Diary entries and investigate the capacity of different containers. A further example with Year 6 students saw us creating a World War 1 trench and writing letters home. The novelty of the change in location was an excellent stimulus – especially with the reluctant writers in the class.
I always seek to use technology in my teaching to enhance and engage students. I find that this is also an excellent pastoral tool as it allows students of differing abilities to work together and produce some outstanding work. Two examples of this are when I used iPads with Egyptian Year 6 students. The first task involved them choosing two stanzas from the Rime of the Ancient Mariner and producing a short animated film which allowed the students creative freedom to draw, paint, act or add pictures that they had researched as they read their verses. The second example saw Middle school students in Portugal write poems based on the Witches’ scene in Macbeth and then record themselves chanting around the fire. This again allowed a huge amount of freedom and creativity, provided meaningful collaboration and ensured high engagement.
I have high expectations of the children in my care and seek to maintain good discipline within a purposeful, stimulating learning environment, in which children feel safe to take risks and make mistakes. Students enjoy learning and enjoy
