I would start by finding out what the student already understands and where they’re struggling. From there, I explain the topic step by step and break it down into simpler parts so it’s easier to follow. I like to work through examples with the student first, and then give them similar questions to try themselves so they can practise the method.
I also encourage students to ask questions and explain their thinking, because that helps me see where they might be getting stuck. My aim is to make sure they understand the reasoning behind the maths, not just memorise steps, so they can apply the method confidently in different types of questions.
