Teaching Experience Statement
My passion for education stems from my own academic journey. Coming from a disadvantaged background, I understand the transformative power of the right support and environment. Teachers, mentors, and programmes such as Harris Experience played a pivotal role in helping me progress to a Russell Group university, and this experience drives my commitment to helping others achieve their potential.
Although my formal tutoring experience began recently, I have consistently taken on teaching and mentoring roles throughout my education:
• GCSE Science Tutoring: I provided 1:1 support to a student named Teni, helping her improve from a Grade 4 to a Grade 7 in science. This was achieved through personalised lesson plans, active recall strategies, and consistent encouragement.
• Peer Mentoring (Key Stage 3): As an older student, I mentored Year 7 pupils, meeting fortnightly to build confidence, improve communication, and teach effective revision techniques such as spaced repetition and the Feynman method.
• Sixth Form Psychology Study Group: I initiated and led weekly sessions for 10–15 peers in preparation for A-Level exams. These sessions focused on tackling difficult topics, writing model essays, and sharing wellbeing strategies, including structured routines and healthy habits.
• STEM Outreach and Public Speaking: Through the Harris Futures Alumni Network, I featured on the Harris Future Talks podcast and delivered a STEM talk at a specialist Harris Academy, inspiring younger students to pursue science.
• University PASS Leader: At The University of Manchester, I facilitate study sessions for first-year students, maintaining attendance rates 50% above average by incorporating interactive activities and academic guidance.
These experiences have taught me that effective teaching is not just about delivering content—it’s about creating an environment where students feel supported, confident, and motivated to succeed. I believe every student can thrive when given the right tools and encouragement, and I aim to provide that through my tutoring.
