I try to understand the student's goals and work with them on achieving smaller steps of that goal which tends to encourage the student to learn more and move forward

Based on my experience as university faculty and also as a private instructor, I can swing both ways regarding teaching methods. I can teach large groups basics and fundamentals and work one-on-one to help them bring their own personality into each production assignment. I work with both reserved and outgoing students to help them be as comfortable as possible.
