Advert description
Learning should be messy, challenging, physical, and above all, fun! I believe education is most effective when it’s interactive and tailored to each learner’s needs. My teaching methods focus on engaging students through active input, using a variety of visual, tactile, and kinaesthetic strategies to support every learner in reaching their goals.
Early Literacy and Reading
I specialise in helping children develop not just their decoding, blending, and fluency skills, but also their love of reading. I aim to spark curiosity about different texts, encourage them to share their opinions, and express their ideas confidently. Building a child's interest and confidence in reading is just as important as honing their technical skills. For adult learners, I offer memorable approaches to understanding English phonemes, grammar, and comprehension, whether it’s English literature, professional texts, or conversational practice. I always customise lessons to suit each learner’s goals and interests.
Writing
Writing can be a challenging and abstract skill, so it's important to make it both accessible and engaging. My focus is on expository writing to help children improve their syntax, grammar, and understanding of sentence structure. I use tactile resources and online games to encourage children to manipulate and construct sentences meaningfully. I draw on Judith Hochman’s The Writing Revolution, which has proven highly effective in helping students develop clear, coherent writing. I’ve successfully implemented this approach in an international school in Tokyo and can support students up to Grade 12, as well as adult learners, in crafting more cohesive, complex sentences and essays.
Mathematics
I am passionate about helping children understand early mathematical concepts using the evidence-based Singaporean CPA method (concrete, pictorial, and abstract). This approach emphasises developing a deep conceptual understanding of numbers and operations, rather than just memorising facts. We explore problems in practical and creative ways, making maths memorable and fun through hands-on activities, while building confidence along the way.
