Teaching is an addictive vocation, because you can see the influence your skills and your ability to share information can have on your students. I absolutely love to see and hear people gain confidence with language skills. An Ghaeilge (the Irish language) is the oldest codified language in northern Europe and it is a privilege to have been able to study it and to become proficient with it. I have taught complete beginners, some from countries like Nigeria, Vietnam and India. Most of my experience has been with Irish state examinations, but I've also taught specialist courses and TEG preparation courses. I favour a scaffolding method and a lexical approach to teaching grammar, whereby I demonstrate the target language and also provide a sentence with it in context. I then help the student to on-board the new language with drilling and repetition, which we reinforce the following week.
