I have a Masters of Education from Johns Hopkins University and am pursuing a PhD in English at Columbia (Teachers College). I love English. Reading, writing, and speaking in English is great fun. Exploring various genres from fantasy, dystopias, horror, and science fiction are just a few. Learning about the power of literary devices will open up your understanding of previously unknown ideas just like a detective trying to solve a mystery. Analyzing masterful work and use of words from great writers such as Shakespeare will deepen your appreciation for English. While expanding your knowledge and appreciation from reading, your own skills will propel your ability to communicate and express yourself as you expand your abilities to write. Writing includes essays that analyze, persuade, or that are just creative fun. Writing can include poetry or even putting your own words to music as lyrics in a song. Writing also includes learning how to express the things that you are most passionate about and that you care about deeply.
