Firstly, this depends on what level the student may be at. I would give the student a mini test and mark it to see what they know/do not know, depending on what they are studying e.g GCSEs or KS3. Then I would start teaching the student through interactive learning, not just reading the textbook to them. I would do this by drawing diagrams on my whiteboard, making and highlighting points that would be important for their education. I would ask them questions after each lesson to make sure they have understood knowledge and will provide homework, probably exam-style questions depending on their level. I will always walk through any questions they do not understand to embed the information into their long-term memory.
