Advert description
I am a Lecturer (Teaching) in the Department of Chemical Engineering at UCL, leading workshop sessions and marking exams for Mathematical Modelling and Analysis I (ENGF0003) and II (ENGF0004). I am also a chemical engineering researcher with eight years of experience in computational modelling and have gained experience delivering and assessing undergraduate mathematics teaching within UCL Engineering, alongside my research work.
I am applying to this role because I want help students become successful at maths. This not only means getting the highest grades but also having a clear understanding of the subject, so they can succeed later in life, whether or not they go into STEM. One of the crucial aspects of teaching mathematics is to tailor the teaching around the student and being consist for the entire journey, so they can build a method that works for them and build confidence along the way, which I also achieve by delivering constructive and high-quality feedback, and keeping material engaging. To address this last point, I usually use Mentimeter during my classes, making the students interact in real time. In addition to this, I use other teaching tools, including pen tablets so the student can watch solutions build up line by line, just like on a whiteboard. Moreover, short quizzes help check the student’s understanding and pick out the topics that need review, and they keep the notes from each lesson for revision. My approach is simple. I break problems into clear steps, link the theory to real-world examples, and go at your pace. I never treat anything as “obvious.” Mistakes are welcome, because they show us exactly what to work on next.
I also write and mark coursework and exams for my undergraduate modules, so I know exactly what examiners look for. I use that insight to design practice problems that target the skills the student will be assessed on and to give them clear, constructive feedback on their work.
I can help with maths from GCSE and A-level all the way through to university level, including calculus, linear algebra, differential equations and mathematical modelling.
