How I Will Teach Mathematics in Tutoring
My approach to teaching mathematics is centred on creating a positive, supportive, and engaging learning environment where every student feels confident to ask questions and make mistakes. I believe that all students can succeed in mathematics when lessons are carefully planned, matched to their individual needs, and delivered with patience and encouragement. My aim as a tutor is not only to improve students’ mathematical knowledge but also to develop their confidence, resilience, and independent problem-solving skills.
At the beginning of tutoring, I will assess each student’s current level of understanding to identify their strengths, misconceptions, and areas for development. This may involve informal questioning, diagnostic assessments, or reviewing previous schoolwork. Understanding where a student is in their learning journey allows me to tailor lessons to meet their specific needs rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.
Each tutoring session will have clear learning objectives that are shared with the student at the start of the lesson. I will explain new concepts using simple language and real-life examples wherever possible, helping students understand why mathematics is important and how it applies to everyday situations. I believe that students learn best when they understand the reasoning behind mathematical methods rather than simply memorising procedures.
My teaching will follow a gradual approach of “I do, We do, You do.” First, I will model worked examples while explaining my thinking step by step. Then we will solve similar questions together, encouraging discussion and reasoning. Finally, students will work independently to demonstrate their understanding while I provide guidance when needed. This structured approach builds confidence and supports long-term retention.
I will use a variety of teaching strategies to maintain engagement and cater for different learning styles. These may include visual representations such as diagrams, number lines, graphs, manipulatives, and digital resources. I will also encourage mathematical discussion by asking open-ended questions that require students to explain their reasoning.
