Assuming that I am teaching maths and I would sit down for 5 minutes and have a 1 to 1 talk with the student as to which year they are in and work out what topics they are currently studying, based on my knowledge of the curriculum, and topics they would like to improve. Firstly, I'd start my explain different methods whilst making sure they are taking notes and then going through worked examples. Once we complete the examples to a satisfactory level, I would give them 5-10 examples style question-from an easy questions to difficult ones. Then we would review the questions and I'd set some more as homework to encourage learning outside of tutoring/school.
