Considerate tutor teacher offering biology tuition KS3 to Degree level in Gloucestershire/Forest of Dean

Hi, I'm Rich. I'm currently a scientist at the University of Oxford, but I also teach a small number of students in my spare time. My "day job" involves writing software for finding genetic material from viruses in blood samples, but I also do some University teaching and supervision of Doctoral students. I originally trained as a Biomedical Scientist and worked in an NHS lab for a few years, but retrained via PhD in Computer Science in 2016. I've held various University and Industry roles at the intersection of computing and medicine. I hold a PGCAPP (PGCE equivalent for higher education) and Higher Education Academy Fellowship, and have been teaching since 2013, although only full-time for two years when I was a Lecturer from-

I didn't do very well at school and always used to struggle in exams. I found the anxiety of constant assessment held me back, and lacklustre teachers in several key subjects made my school experience unfulfilling. I try to leverage my personal experiences in my tutoring with techniques to reduce stress, build confidence and target a student's personal interests and aspirations. This might include finding "threshold concepts" that underpin greater understanding, adapting teaching and learning materials to a specific learning style (e.g. mind mapping for more visual learners) and providing a wider context to an idea outside of the curriculum, which can be helpful for "deep learners" who need more than just a surface understanding of a topic to be able to commit facts to memory.

I offer tuition in Biology (including biostatistics) and Computer Science (Python) to students from KS3 to Undergraduate. I can also advise on University admissions, including for Clinical Medicine.
