Advert description
Hi, I am Arjun.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
I have a First-Class Honours master's degree in mathematics from the University of Edinburgh, including studying mathematical education and physics courses. I have four years' experience in tutoring and maths communication working with secondary school students (including through the UK Maths Trust), pre-honours undergraduates, as well as with people of all ages through my work in maths outreach. My school background is through the English system (where I achieved A*A*A*A* at A Levels, and-at GCSE plus A (top grade) in Additional Maths FSMQ), but I am familiar with the Scottish curriculum and can tutor other systems.
I have an Enhanced DBS check.
TUTORING STYLE:
Foremost, I understand that different people have different backgrounds and have different levels of familiarity and confidence with maths. I believe that maths is a fascinating and rewarding, though challenging, subject and anyone can succeed with the right support. I take an encouraging and student-centred approach with a focus on problem-solving and conceptual understanding. I use discussion and collaborative problem-solving to uncover a students' weak points, and use a combination of explanations and structured explorations to tackle these. I help students develop not only mathematical knowledge, but their critical thinking and mathematical problem-solving skills as well. My approach is informed by pedagogical theory and refined through my years of experience based on what I have found works well. However, I understand well that people learn best in different ways, so I am always looking to adapt my teaching style to best suit each student individually.
WHO I TUTOR:
I am happy to tutor anyone, but my focuses are:
- Students struggling with a maths/physics course who would like some extra support
- Strong students who would like to stretch their mathematical and problem-solving skills, including training for maths competitions (e.g. UKMT Maths Challenge, Olympiads, etc.)
I can tutor in-person (Edinburgh-based) and online.
My rates depend on the level of maths:
- £25/hr for up to Nat 5/GCSE level
- £35/hr for Higher/Advanced Higher, A level Maths & Further Maths, competition maths
- £45/hr for undergraduate level
I am keen to support people of all backgrounds and income levels, so I am willing to discuss rates if these pose a challenge.
