Advert description
I’d start by breaking down concepts and theories into digestible information by using case-studies that examine real life examples. Furthermore, I would use multimedia tools such as videos or diagrams to help the student visualise the concepts and hopefully understand better rather than just having to read lines and lines of writing.
Additionally, I believe that open discussions and debating about content is crucial for students when trying to connect to the teaching. By the end of the session I’d encourage the use of reflection to go over what we’ve covered and to ask the student what they would like to do next time/focus on. Therefore, the content that I’d teach would be completely personal to that student as I’d tailor the session around their curriculum or interests.
Also, I was asked to apply to become a Furness College Rep, something which I wouldn’t naturally have felt comfortable doing but in pushing myself out of my comfort zone I enjoyed every minute of mentoring six vulnerable first year students. I established clear cut communication with them, built trust and rapport through organizing social events with them. They learnt to trust me, reasonably quickly, so much so that I was called on to to deal with their social issues relating to their mental health, bullying and assisting them in accessing learning support programs.
