Clear GCSE English progress — not just more English help

I have been tutoring professionally since 2018, helping students improve their GCSE English Language and Literature skills across AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas and IGCSE.

Parents should be able to see what their child is working on, what is improving and what still needs attention.

That is a big part of how I teach.

I first work out where the student is struggling and what is holding their answers back. Then I teach that skill clearly, practise it with them and keep track of how well they can use it independently.

That might mean learning how to:
- understand a question properly
- build a stronger paragraph
- analyse a quotation
- structure an essay
- improve creative writing
- manage time more effectively in an exam.

I do not simply give students more worksheets or keep repeating past papers and hope something changes.

If one explanation does not work, I try another. I use different texts, examples and topics to teach the same underlying skills. I also get to know what interests the student and what helps them understand.

Competence leads to confidence.

When students know what they are doing and can see themselves improving, they usually become more willing to participate and less dependent on constant help.

I have worked with more than 40 students who went on to improve by 1–2 GCSE grades, with a smaller number improving by 3–4 grades. Those bigger improvements came from students who were willing to practise, think and apply what we covered.

I am supportive and easy to talk to, but I do expect students to take part. They will answer questions, explain their thinking and write during lessons. I want them learning how to do the work for themselves, not waiting for me to give them every answer.

Parents are kept informed too. I will tell you what we are working on, what has started to improve and what still needs attention.

And if I feel a student is not engaging enough for tuition to be worthwhile, I will tell you. I would rather be honest than let a parent keep spending money without seeing meaningful progress.
