Patient, supportive Mandarin teacher offering personalised lessons for beginners, children, GCSE, A-level and advanced learners.

Advert description
My teaching style is creative, energetic and flexible. I aim to make Chinese practical and interesting, rather than relying only on memorisation. Having taught learners from Early Years to A-level, I understand that different ages and levels need different approaches, so lessons are adapted to each learner’s needs and goals. I have taught Mandarin in primary and secondary settings in the UK. As a sole Mandarin teacher in a primary school, I taught from Early Years to Year 6 and designed the whole-school Mandarin curriculum and learning resources. This gave me strong experience in introducing Chinese to beginners and building confidence step by step. With younger learners, I use pictures, games, stories and speaking activities to keep lessons lively. During my secondary teacher training, I taught Mandarin across KS3–5 and gained experience with the Mandarin Excellence Programme. I have supported GCSE and A-level learners with different levels of confidence and ability. For older or more advanced learners, lessons can include extended speaking, reading, writing, grammar, character work, exam preparation and more challenging discussion. Speaking is an important part of my lessons. Learners are given frequent opportunities to use Chinese through picture description, role play, conversation, games and real-life situations. I also pay close attention to pronunciation, pinyin, tones and characters, especially at the beginning, as a strong foundation makes later learning much easier. My background in Chinese Language and Literature also shapes my teaching. I enjoy linking language with culture through festivals, food, daily life, traditions, literature and modern Chinese society. I have organised Mandarin clubs, Chinese New Year activities, cultural trips and a Chinese Traditional Opera Appreciation course, so I enjoy bringing cultural elements into lessons naturally. I also have experience designing digital learning materials and an online Chinese culture course. Online lessons may include presentations, visual resources, short videos, quizzes, interactive exercises and personalised worksheets. Regular review helps learners remember and use new language confidently. Overall, my aim is to create lessons that are structured without feeling rigid, challenging without becoming stressful, and energetic while still having a clear learning purpose.
