Hi, I’m Ying, a native Mandarin speaker from China, now living in Manchester. I’m fluent in English and hold a PhD in environmental science. Through my research and work on international projects, I’ve worked with people from different cultural backgrounds and developed experience explaining complex ideas clearly and adapting information to different audiences.
My Mandarin lessons will be friendly, practical and tailored to your goals. Whether you are learning for travel, everyday conversation, work or connecting with friends and family, we’ll begin by discussing what you would like to achieve and how you prefer to learn.
For beginners, we can start with pinyin, pronunciation and tones, then build useful vocabulary and simple sentences. You’ll practise introducing yourself, asking questions, ordering food and talking about your interests. If you already know some Mandarin, we can develop your fluency through conversations, short reading activities and topics that interest you. We can also explore simplified Chinese characters and aspects of Chinese culture.
A typical lesson will include a short review, an introduction to new words or sentence patterns, and plenty of guided practice. I’ll use examples, pictures and everyday situations to help you understand and remember what you learn. I can explain things in English when helpful and provide gentle corrections as you practise.
Having learned English myself, I understand that speaking another language can feel daunting. I want you to feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and progressing at your own pace. We’ll agree on manageable goals and revisit what you’ve learned so you can recognise your progress and feel increasingly confident using Mandarin.
