I have been a lecturer in mathematics at college level for more than 13 years know. There is nothing else that I enjoy more than solving the problems in math books in the company of my students. The cognitive process involved in solving problems gives me dopamine like nothing else. The creativity and fun are the motivational factors for me to teach. On the technical side of things I have the ability to recognise the issue if a student is not being able to do well and then design and implement the strategies to resolve those issues.
For instance, I believe the majority of student who learn mathematics are not able appreciate the difference in the nature of the subject matter of mathematics and other science subjects. It is more like a skill. So as in a skilled operation you need to practice along with understanding theory same is the case in mathematics.
Having said that problem is two fold.The theory is more like argumentative philosophical study with high degree of abstract ideas.So it has the best of both worlds on one side to master it you should be exhibit craftsman like skill while simultaneously being able to think like a ruthless pragmatic philosopher.
