Vivienne Thornton

Hi, I’m Viv, an experienced Biology and Maths tutor with a Ph.D. in Biomedical Genetics, a degree in Applied Biology, and years of experience working in the scientific industry (practicing what I teach!). After taking a career break to raise my children, I’m excited to be returning to teaching. I have a current Enhanced DBS check and I am registered with the DBS Update Service.

I have extensive experience teaching Biology and Maths at GCSE and Biology to A Level, with a particular focus on exam technique for the AQA A Level Biology syllabus. Over the years, I’ve worked with more than 70 students, including those with behavioural or learning differences such as dyslexia and dyscalculia. In addition to tutoring, I have contributed as a freelance writer for DigiSchool, producing revision guides for Maths and Biology across both AQA and Edexcel exam boards.

I understand that doing well in a subject that just doesn’t “click” can feel really challenging. I provide friendly lessons backed by methods to help you get your head around the subject and improve your exam technique. My goal is to help you build confidence, grasp difficult concepts, and reach your full potential.

I know it can be harder to stay focused when learning online, so I make my lessons as interactive and engaging as possible - just like I do when teaching in person! I use screen sharing and live annotation to walk through slides and solve exam questions in real time. I also ask no-pressure questions throughout the lesson to keep students involved, check understanding, and make sure we spend extra time where it’s really needed.

For my Biology students I specialise in A Level Biology and AQA exam preparation, but I teach students from all exam boards and levels. Since biological principles are universal, my lessons focus on helping you truly understand the subject - not just memorise facts! Whether you`re studying AQA, Edexcel, OCR, or GCSE Biology, I’ll make sure you feel confident and capable in every topic.

For my Maths students, sometimes it’s just one tricky topic that needs clearing up, and other times the whole subject can feel a bit much. That’s completely okay! You’re never too young or too old to boost your confidence in Maths. I get to know how you learn best, then break things down into simple, easy-to-follow steps, using examples and practice questions that suit your level. We can go at whatever pace you need, spending as long as you like on any topic until it really clicks.
